The Brain Does Not Stop Developing When Childhood Ends

Many people think brain development belongs only to childhood.

A child learns to speak.

A teenager develops new cognitive abilities.

A young adult gains knowledge and professional skills.

Then, according to the common assumption, the brain simply begins a long process of decline.

That view is incomplete.

The human brain changes throughout life.

Some abilities may become slower with age.

Certain forms of memory or processing speed may decline.

Disease may also affect cognition.

But the adult and aging brain retains an important capacity:

Neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity refers broadly to the nervous system's ability to change its structure, connections, and function in response to experience, learning, behavior, injury, and environmental demands.

Aging does not mean that development has to stop.
