High Cholesterol Is Not Just a Number
Many people discover hyperlipidemia unexpectedly.
They feel healthy.
They have no pain.
They exercise.
They work normally.
Then a blood test shows:
high LDL cholesterol,
high triglycerides,
high non-HDL cholesterol,
or another abnormal lipid marker.
Because there may be no obvious symptoms, it is easy to ignore.
But abnormal blood lipids can contribute over many years to atherosclerosis—the buildup of plaque within arteries—and increase cardiovascular risk.
That is why hyperlipidemia deserves attention even when a person feels perfectly well.
At the same time:
Hyperlipidemia is not one single problem.
A person with LDL-C of 190 mg/dL is not necessarily the same as a person whose main abnormality is triglycerides of 300 mg/dL.
And neither is identical to a patient with:
diabetes,
familial hypercholesterolemia,
previous heart attack,
